A Thought About Lindsay Lohan

It's occurred to me with the recent report connecting Lindsay and Courtenay Semel that Lindsay might become OUR Lindsay, that she might just be a real, bonafide lesbian. Here's the key quote from the superreliable News of the World:

BEDDED a string of men in a bid to suppress her lesbian urges — and to hide them from her public.

SANK into addictions as the pressure of her double life grew.

That's prose for you, huh? And this from a "friend" of Courtenay's:

“From the start Lindsay was very confused about her feelings for Courtenay so did more and more drugs to stifle the sexual attraction she was experiencing."

Now, obviously Linds isn't a Gold Star lesbian but, really, so few of us are (I'm not, of course, speaking for myself). But what if it's true that the poor thing has been going through the same struggle so many of us has, trying to figure out it it's ok to be gay (should I wear the Birks, should I get the mullet?), except through the lenses of a million pap's high-tech digital cameras? If that turns out to be the case then we may have a historical moment on our hands where a mainstream actress who happens to be gay is allowed to continue her career as a hottie, romantic lead. Lindsay acquired her role in her recently wrapped picture Labor Pains after she was connected with Samantha Ronson. And while many people may have been skeptical about their relationship it may not ultimately matter. Lindsay Lohan -- not Jodie Foster, not Sarah Paulson, not Saffron Burrows -- but Lindsay Lohan may be the one who finally breaks through that hardest of glass ceilings for the gay actor.

And here's a recent pic of Lindsay and Sam (awww):

That would be awesome if she became the first actress to live openly as a gay woman and still have a career in major Hollywood films. It is now obvious to me that she has been bearded up until the beginning of this year when she started living openly with Samantha. It is believed that the character of Niki from the L Word is based on her, and her struggles with being closeted. Angela Robinson who directed Lindsay in Herbie directed a lot of the Niki episodes too. Unfortunately for her she will lose almost all of her young-male-boys-fantasising-about-being-with-her demographic of her fanbase. Props to her for risking it career-wise in order to fulfill her own happiness and well-being. It must have been a hard decision but props to her for turning her back on her agents (I'm guessing) and cracking the glass in Hollywood's closet that has been so carefully maintained and locked by agents/PR people etc since the beginning of Hollywood films til now.

Thanks for commenting -- I forgotten that rumor about the Nicki character -- it does make sense when you think about it. Lindsay's had a rough go of things -- she's in a vicious business and clearly Sam is a stabalizing influence -- let's hope the industry and the sick and ruthless media environment doesn't tear her down again.

Anna how can you say she will lose her male fan base...Give me a BREAK! Number one fantasy of men and boys world wide, 2 or more women together, or with them. Since she has a strong "heterosexual background" they can imagine she is going through a faze and will come around. If it were two men..the demographic might change but in this case...she will probably pick up a a lot more people as fans. Trust me.

Yes, it is a sexual fantasy for men for two women to be together but only two FEMME women and only if it for MEN's enjoyment/sexual gratification. Lindsay and Samantha have only kissed in public twice and neither time was it a make-out just a kiss on the lips. Tabloids like the Mirror are constantly projecting their lesbian fantasies saying that Samantha gave her a lap dance in a club and other such nonsense. Men find androgynous/butch women very threatening and Samantha is androgynous is not the type of lesbian that is in most men's lesbian fantasies. Most comments about Samantha Ronson have been something along the lines of 'She looks like a guy' or 'Ew she's ugly find a hot girl Lindsay'. She is challenging stereotypes. 'How can she choose HER over a guy?' is what many people think. Samantha Ronson gets homophobic remarks made about her A LOT by the press, comediennes, Lindsay's fans etc. She couldn't even escape it when she just came to Australia for 24 hours, they kept referring to her as 'Lesbian Sam Ronson' and even used the juvenile Perez Hilton 'SaMANtha' term in the Australian tabloid press, sure it is a tabloid but homophobia is not acceptable. It was shameful.
